Music Economics Network
Musicians seriously starting out in a music
career should always take into consideration
the expense they will eventually have to
face to continue their advance in the music
market.
Those musicians that don't take into
consideration these expenses, unfortunately
are almost guaranteed to come to an untimely
end, with their dreams shattered.
The following list is useful for any band
who is considering to embarque in a music
career, and also the bands who are lucky
enough to have found a sponsor to pay for
these costs, many times in the way of
recording contracts, to understand more the
role and expense that these companies do and
spend. Only by understanding what is
involved in the music industry can we begin
to make sense and eliminate why, at times,
we think the music industry acts in strange
ways.
There are many sites that offer basic
information for free, mine is no different,
pop to
http://www.marketingyourmusic.net
and you may have for free important basic
information that will help you to get off to
a good start.
What is really important is that you get to
know the more detailed information that
somebody like Bob Baker, John Vestman or
myself offer, because with that information,
you will have something that, in my
experience, your competitor, in a very
competetive market will not have. The right
information.
So, let's at what needs to be paid for:
Music Economics Network
Pre-Poduction
Professional/technical/business formation;
audience formation; musical instruments;
other material (sheet music, music stands
etc.).
Production
Recording; graphic production; mixing;
mastering; pressing.
(+ pirate pressing)
Distribution
Storage; transport; stores and other sales
points; internet.
(+ pirate distribution)
Commerce
Marketing and publicity; shows; TV/radio/press
media; internet.
(+ pirate commerce)
Consumption
Shows; internet; stores and other sales
points; exports.
(+ pirate consumption)
Public Politics
VAT; purchase Tax; earnings tax etc.
So, as we can see, in an ideal world, the
return is made from the commerce and
consumption. However with piracy and stiffer
competition, some of this reurn will be, in
many cases, wiped out.
So if you are seriously wanting to ingress
in the music market, you need to ask
yourself the following: If companies are
finding it harder, and they have the
necessary information to be able to compete
in the market, what chance would you have
without it?
